A busy area to the northwest of London but inside the M25, originating from Saxon times on the banks of the River Colne is the large town of Watford with its diversity of attractions. The most noticeable feature on entering the town on its ring-road is the Harlequin shopping centre with much car parking and over 130 shops from small specialised outlets to Next, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer's. A large mainline railway station partners superb road access. There are many cafes, pubs, take-aways and entertainment venues, e.g. a multi screen cinema, nightclubs, 10-pin bowling and bars. Accommodation ranges from a Hilton hotel to little guesthouses. There are two museums in the town, one having recently celebrated its silver jubilee and charting the history of Watford past and present, housed in the former Benskins Brewery Mansion. Its displays of local history and industry include Watford Football Club memorabilia and the Cassiobury Collection of fine art. The other museum is a Fire Museum based in the ex-workshops building at Watford Fire Station and open on Wednesday mornings. The football club are a championship team founded in 1881. Famously owned by Sir Elton John, the club's perhaps most well known player is John Barnes, who played there for 6 years. They are based at the Vicarage Road ground, which they've shared since 1997 with the Saracens Rugby Club. Culturally, Watford has both a theatre and a Philharmonic Society. The theatre is Edwardian but a Lottery Grant enabled refurbishment in 2002 and increased facilities for audiences of over 100,000 per year in the only producing theatre in the area. The Philharmonic Society was established in 1935, now performing 5 concerts a year at The Colosseum and being one of the UK's largest amateur societies combining orchestra and choir.

Parking suspensions

There may be occasions when it is necessary for the council to suspend parking bays within the Controlled Parking Zone. This prohibits parking on a specific length of a restriction for all vehicles for a specifed time, except to the vehicle for which the suspension applies. In such circumstances, advanced warning will be given when possible and signs will be erected on the nearest lamp columns to advise motorists of the relevant details. All contractors are also additionally advised to letter-drop local residents. Any motorist who leaves their vehicle parked in a suspended bay during the signed hours will be liable to receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

Applying for a Suspension. Every application for a suspension is considered on its individual merits. It is imperative that as much information as possible is provided so that an informed decision can be made as to whether or not the suspension can be granted.

Daily/weekly charges apply and as much notice as possible is required. Unless in emergency circumstances (gas/sewage/water leaks etc), any request made with less than one full week remaining before the suspension is due to commence will not be authorised. All contractors are further advised to letter-drop local residents prior to the first date of the suspension. Applicants should be advised that although a Penalty Charge Notice may be issued to vehicles parking in a suspended bay, the Parking Service do not have the power to remove vehicles. For further information or to apply for a suspension, please attend the Parking Shop, 71-73 Market Street, in person, call 01908 223507 or e-mail watfordcouncil@watford.parkinguk.org
